Thank you, this would be the bug in question.  In reading the comments
history, it appears that the issue was resolved for Linux, but reverted
due to issues with AIX.  I interpret this to mean that I may safely
restore the code for my compilation.  But I'm confused why a bug
pertaining to AIX, an IBM UNIX implementation would be solved by
universally modifying a code segment in a file called
config-linux-common.h.  Should the feature not be conditionally
deactivated on AIX builds?
