I've been out of direct ACE development for awhile now, but we've gone
through the process here of using the express edition of VC8 and you're
going to need to install and configure the latest platform SDK as the
express editions don't come with one.  Other than that, you should be
able to make it work.

I don't know that we've built *ACE* using the express editions, but we
do have some developers who build our software against ACE and it's
working fine.  I've had a look at VC8 express and I honestly like it
better than VC7 (or 2003 or whatever it's called :-P ).
