In GME2000:
Inherited references can only refer (be redirected to) a derived instance of
the target of its base. (Null refs are also rejected).
I don't know the reason for this, but I suspect it is not trivial now to get
rid of this limitation (I am thinking about the MGA library functions.). So,
if somebody _really_ needs this, I will try to "fix it".
